Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

  • Do I need any experience before my intro?

Not at all! Our intros are designed for beginners. Whether you’ve never thrown a punch before or you already train, we’ll meet you where you are.

  • What should I wear?

Comfortable workout clothes — something you can move easily in. Most people wear a t-shirt and athletic shorts/pants.

  • Do I need to bring anything?

Just some water and a good attitude!

  • How long does the intro last?

Adults get a 30-minute private lesson. Teens, Juniors, and Little Warriors join a full class with other students.

  • Can I bring a friend or family member?

Absolutely! Just let us know ahead of time so we can plan for the extra person and make sure everyone’s signed their waiver.

  • What happens after my free intro?

We’ll talk with you about your experience, answer any questions, and go over membership options. There’s no pressure — the intro is meant to help you see what our school is all about and if we’re right for you.

  • Will I be expected to keep up with the group class if I’m new?

Not at all. Our instructors are great at helping new students jump in at their own pace. You’ll get guidance and support the whole way through.

  • Is Krav Maga safe for kids?

Yes! Our kids’ classes focus on confidence, discipline, and practical self-defense — always taught in a controlled, age-appropriate way.

  • Am I too old to start training?

Not at all! We have adults of all ages training at Burbank Krav Maga — including several of our most dedicated students who are in their 50s and 60s. Many adults start with no prior experience and quickly find themselves improving in strength, confidence, and skill while becoming part of our community. Our instructors are great at helping each person train at their own pace, so you can challenge yourself safely and enjoy every step of the journey.

About Burbank Krav Maga

  • What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is a practical self-defense system originally developed for the Israeli Defense Forces. It’s designed to teach real-world techniques that are simple, effective, and easy to learn — no matter your fitness level or background. Krav Maga is not a traditional martial art. No katas. No rituals. Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self defense in the shortest possible time. Our students learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bearhugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks. Just as important, we teach people to function during the stress and shock of a sudden, violent encounter. Tested on the battlefield and in the streets, Krav Maga's practical approach to self defense will make you safer and more secure.

  • How is your curriculum built?

Our curriculum pulls from a wide range of martial arts and is constantly evolving. We focus on what works — adapting and improving techniques as we find better or more efficient ways to handle real-world situations. You’ll see influences from systems like boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For example, our groundwork draws heavily from BJJ, but instead of training for a tap-out or points like in sport competition, we adapt those techniques for self-defense — using them to create space, escape, and get back to your feet as quickly as possible.

  • What makes Burbank Krav Maga different?

Our instructors bring real-world experience, and our community is known for being supportive and welcoming. We focus on practical skills, not competition — so every class helps you build confidence, fitness, and readiness for real-life situations. In addition to Self Defense, training at Burbank Krav teaches self control, discipline, confidence, respect, and focus. Krav Maga is not a sport. Our emphasis is on Self Preservation. We will always attempt to deescalate a situation before resorting to violence. If we have to use Self Defense, we will do what we need to (and only what we need to) in order to get home safe.

  • Is training in Krav Maga safe?

Yes — safety is our top priority. Our instructors are trained to create a challenging but controlled environment. You’ll learn to push yourself while staying safe and respecting your training partners.

  • Do I need to be in shape before starting?

Nope! Krav Maga will help you get in shape. Classes naturally build strength, endurance, and coordination — all while learning useful self-defense skills.

  • How are classes structured?

Every class starts with a warm-up, followed by lessons and drills built around our rotating curriculum. You’ll train with partners in a supportive environment, and everything is scaled to class level.

  • How often should I train?

Most students train two to three times a week to see consistent progress, but the schedule is flexible — you can train as often as your schedule allows.
